Hi Guys
Can someone assist me with a problemetic 325i , the car is running a stock Motronic system and has no mods that I know of.
The motor was rebuilt a while ago , but since we bought the car the issue has persisted.
When we collected the car the idling was quite high , 1100rpm, we adjusted the screw and brought it down, however when it's cold it refuses to idle , so we swapped out the ICV and that sort of sorted it for a while. But it would intermittently either die or idle to high again.
Sent the car in to the dyno and changed the chip out , the car then seemed ok for a while but the erratic idle continued.
The problem is it's not always consistant, sometimes it idles too high , sometimes it refuses to idle ,this is cold or hot. I have fiddled with the idle screw a number of times but I should not be doing this that often.
Any ideas what else I can check. Yesterday it refused to idle when warm, so we pulled the plug of the ICV and it idled fine, this morning it refused to again.
Ideas ??

DO NOT TOUCH THE SCREW!!! This is not an idle adjustment, only has one correct setting, and that's where it was set at the factory.Shaheenk wrote:we adjusted the screw
The first thing you have to do is to get this set back where it should be, and any other 'screws' that may have been played with, then check that the throttle position switch is working as it should be, and correctly set in relation to the throttle stop.

Was the cambelt fitted correctly when the engine was rebuilt? If it was accidentally fitted one tooth out, it may cause a high/intermittent idle.

My 325 was idling high, at about 1100 when warm so I read up on throttle switches, ICVs and air leaks. I don't have any carb cleaner so instead I took it out and kicked its ribs in round the local roads.
When we got back 30 minutes later, the idle was smack on 750 warm and smoother than it had been in ages. It might not work for you, but it's worth trying first!

Aye, a good thrashing can work wonders. Sometimes...
