Hi,

Basically, the cowboy who owned the car before me thought he was an electrical genius and butchered the wiring for the stereo now sorted and cut the wires inside the auto gearbox surround where the little bulb goes...

I'm in the process of fixing this however, I have no idea where to put the bulb... Does anyone have a photo of what the inside of the auto box surround SHOULD look like as mine looks like this

Apart from the chocolate block connector should be a two pin plug and socket, that's pretty much as it should be. The bulb holder looks like it's in place, on the end of the wire that loops around.
The light shines out of the small hole in the plastic, near the screw at the top RH corner of your pic.

Hi Brian,

Where I've put the arrow, is this the housing for where the bulb goes?

It is, and it looks like the bulb holder, at least, is there.
Kept in place by a little plastic hook on the RH side, IIRC.

OK - Cool... I wasn't really sure what it was, so I'll get on it tonight and do some soldering :)

The wire from the bulb should go to a multi pin plug and socket mounted in a metal bracket, buried under the foam below and just in front of the front screw in the pic.
Looking at the picture more closely, I can see another chocolate block connector hiding below, and I suspect this is the one replacing the two pin plug and socket. Is the top connector in the wiring to the bulb? If so, this shouldn't be there at all, and you probably have a replacement light and wire, connected onto the ends of the original wire, at the point where it broke.

This is my theory... Throughout the years of pushing back and forth the gearstick, the wire may have become lose and broken. The previous owner must have taken this out, because I couldn't see any light.

A fellow Zoner kindly sold me the replacement bulb and housing... I just couldn't work out where these wires were coming from, although studying the picture in more detail along with what you have said, it seems like for whatever reason, he's made a wire pass through there!

It's difficult actually being able to see what's going on now that I'm enlightened as I have to wait until I get home to test out different solutions.

Such a pain really, for something that could have been so easily fixed by the lazy previous owner!

Maybe he wasbusy dealing with all the other "faults" then gave up and sold the car on 8O :D
Perhaps he did... but the idle problem seems to have sorted itself out on it's own...

After fiddling around... I found the multi pin connector which was HELL to take out and looks like HELL to put back in! I traced the original wiring... It leads right into where my little red arrow points!! Really what looks like has happened is he's added extra wiring... That bulb casing I bought off a fellow ezoner was there all along! Not a big deal, because it wasn't expensive!

So it's easily fixable! I assume that the code for these bulbs is 286 as well... the 1.2W ones?
