I use a 'tuning fork' type splitter and my largest 'Birmingham spanner'.

lots of wd40, put the old bolt back on with 1/4 from the top of the thread get a jack handle or something long and bang the shit out of it! the nut will be completely mangled but thread should be fine,
works perfect for me everytime!

looks like old tuning fork style,.... race manifold obscures nut too much for hitting the to of the joint.

You don't need a balljoint splitter to rebuild an E30 suspension !
The ones I have done by taking the nut to over the top of the thread, socket on it and several extension bars and then just whack it with the tapping stick - you might ruin the nut but as long as its covering the top of the thread the threaded part will be fine.
I've done a few and seen more done this way - never failed yet.

I use a splitter very similar to this on all of the joints: http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalo ... CGgQ8wIwBg

If you can use this on the inner control arm balljoints, you know something I don't! Excellent tool for all the others, but the control arm inner needs a fork type, unless you resort to the more Neanderthal methods above.Dan320is wrote:I use a splitter very similar to this on all of the joints: http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalo ... Lol + 1, neanderthal method does the job! The balljoint splitter I have tends to damage the rubber, just hammer it!willnz wrote:Neanderthal works for me, I have a nut/washer combined unit which I put on. The washer lip gives the socket a good land. A few taps and it frees itself. Much better than lying under the car trying to swing a hammer!
