I have the opertunity to lay my hands on an e36 compact 1.8 8v auto for next to nothing due to headgasket failure. I'm thinking this may be a cheap way to a 5 stud conversion.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Also, what is involved?

Thanks

No such thing as a cheap 5-lug conversion. Even if you use the E36 rear parts, you'll still need either E36 M3 or M Z3 parts for the front, both of which carry a hefty price premium.
