Okay, please suppress the urge to laugh... I'm having trouble removing a gear shift knob from a 1985 323i E30 (manual). It twists through 360 degrees but ill not pull off vertically - what am I doing wrong here?! Thanks.

Mine came off on my first drive of the car.
The housing under the steering wheel popped off when changing gear, enabling my foot to come off the clutch then in the midst of panic tried to get it into second gear, the gear knob came flying off onto the back bench. With one foot trapped on the clutch and the other on the throttle I coasted slowly to a high revved halt...
Thats one way of getting it off. However, I'd try it stationary with the engine off and to consider all of the above suggestions..
