Un surprisingly my car failed its MOT this week. One of the things it failed on are

Offside front posistion lamp (s) not working [1.1.A.3b]

Nearside front posistion lamp (s) not working [1.1.A.3b]

I thought it was just the bulbs weren't working, but on closer inspection they are all working fine. Is it the aim of the headlight that has failed the test or condition of the lense?

Please help :o:

cheers

Front position lights (sidelights or front parking lights) don't have any 'aim', and the headlamp lens or bulb envelope would have to be in pretty poor condition for them to have a discretionary fail if the bulbs were lit. Condition of the headlamp reflector is irrelevant.
Never seen it with a front bulb, but I've seen rear bulbs where the glass envelope has gone so black that it would fail the test, even though it was lit.

I spoke to my tester today and they said it was that my side lights didn't come on with the ignition off. I tried it today and it worked fine though, which is what I don't get.

Sidelamps are normally tested with the ignition on, as the next check is to check the operation of the headlamps and main beam.

The only time sidelights need to come on with the ignition off is if the car is fitted with day running lights. This is so the tester can check that the sidelights do work underneath the glare of the day running lamps.

Not true, side lights (and hazards) must work with ignition off. Its safety related, if the car breaks down on an unlit road it needs to be able to be seen by other road users.

Wonder if this is a loose/poor connection that chose not to work for the tester? :D

I agree the hazard lamps MUST work with ignition on and off but no where under the front position lamps in the testers manual does it ask for the same check. See link below;

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/d ... guides.htm

It does mention in the information column to check vehicles fitted with Dim Dip (DRLs) with ignition off so the front position lamps can be observed correctly.
