I bought a used lock set from a breakers, and it came with the ignition barrel and key, lopped straight off the steering column with a disc cutter.
Now I'm trying to follow the Wiki procedure to removal the barrel, and it ain't budging. I'm thinking something's up since the key won't turn past Position 1; I can just get it the point where the steering lock is fully down, and OFTEN locked into position, but there's no way the barrel will turn more than that.
So, broken barrel or broken lock mount? Should I just chop the barrel out with an angle grinder?
Possible broken ignition barrel

This is exactly what I got:

When you turn the key the steering lock lump comes all the way down; sometimes it sticks there, sometimes not.

Could be that the column wants rattling whilst turning the key?
And is that a shear bolt about halfway down?

Yeah, I've read your post about drilling out the sheer bolts, but I don't see how that helps the barrel come out of the housing. And the remnants of the shaft are absolutely locked solid into the housing, so I don't see how any "rattling" would help.

Couldn't work out how to do any of that, so I took the hacksaw to the aluminium and lopped the barrel section off. After splitting the housing, I got the barrel out in one piece, which now tuns easily with the key, so it was definitely something in the steering lock that was jamming the works.

Now I have the barrel in my hand I can see how it's locked in place; that brass block can pop in when the key turns to position 1. But poking something in the hole (as per the Wiki) never makes that block pop in, so I'm still flummoxed as to how to get my current lock out of the car...

That did help; prodding AND rotating got the brass tab to retreat. Rushed down to the garage and repeated it on the ignition, and got that to pop out too
Cheers diable.
Only issue now is that the rotating arm behind the tumbler (that works the switch and steering lock) popped out too, so I'll have to fiddle around to get that back in. But cheers all!

No need
It's the spring-loaded part that fits between the ignition lock barrel and the ignition switch itself. As soon as I got the barrel out, that popped out too, so I had to remove the cowling and pop the switch off. Fiddly stuff, but all done now.
And all because someone had battered the Touring boot lock with a screwdriver...
