Folks,
It's time to bite the bullet and get some rust treatment/prevention before things get serious. I'm looking to remove the rust/paint and get back to clean(ish) metal and then use Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 to cure and seal the area.

What's the best method of getting the rust off in the first place? I've got an electric drill, a mini dremel and a well exercised right wrist :) Should I be using wire wheels? flap wheels? or just wet and dry on a sanding block?

Thanks for ze help...

Knot brush on a grinder - you may also need a welder by the time you've finished

Rob's got the right idea. You won't get the right speeds with a drill, you really need 10,000+ rpm and a steel brush to attack rust.

I used a phosphoric acid first, but you have to go easy with it.

in the body shop were i work we use these little green plastic wheels with very stiff bristles on them i find them good at removing rust, paint and sealer without ripping up the steel
the discs are made by 3M and you would need the adapter

RightO, thanks folks.
The dremel can manage 14k rpm but it's a tiny hand held rechargeable one. I don't know how fast the drill goes, but nothing close to the Dremel.

Has anyone tried something like This?? From reviews they seem to wear out very fast, but at that price and with the small areas I'm looking at I don't think it will matter much. I'm more worried about damaging good steel because I can't weld!

The small areas don't stay small for long when you take the grinder to them ! :(

the polywheels are very good, not as aggressive as the knot brush, they are available as grinder attachments as well. They work best on flat sections, niggly bits the knot brush is the best bet.

I also used these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115MM-WIRE-BR ... 649wt_1163

same idea as the knot brush but not as aggressive.

drill isn't really the right tool, the rpm is too low and it will be hard work to hold in 1 place.

Thanks Jos. I'll see how far I can get without a grinder.... much as I love powertools there's a limit to how many I can buy a use once!
