Parked the car yesterday night with everything running as normal, came to it today and it refuses to start. The starter motor is turning (maybe a bit too freely) and it makes the occassional weak effort at firing but nothing else. I've not had the chance to give it a once over yet, any ideas?

check you have fuel going to engine you can do this by disconnecting the pipe that goes to the fuel pressure regulator on the end of the injection rail if fuel does not come out at a good rate when cranking your engine you could have a faulty pump or relay

things to check.
firstly wait for quiet time and shut yourself in car, when you switch ignition on (with everything else off) you should here a either a click or slight buzz.
that will be the fuel pump relay and pump itself.
on cranking the engine is it turning over?
if not try putting car in gear (2nd or 3rd) and pushing car with ignition off!
so that the starter is repositioned against flywheel.
if it now starts you have a starter that needs replacing.
if upon cranking it turns over, the most likely causes are:
1. sluggish turn over and the battery is too low.... charge for few hours
2. turns over as normal could be flooded due to erratic weather we have... try pulling fuel pump fuse and recranking.
3 try cleaning the crank sensor.
as a recovery driver flooding is the most common problem when it gets cold overnight, the best advice is that you should never have to start a car which runs fuel injection by pressing the throttle.
these vehicles should start without any help at all.
turn the ignition to 2nd position, count to 3 then crank engine leaving pedal alone.
and hey presto she should go.
certain cars are prone to quick ignition syndrome which if turning ignition key too quick throws up faults within the ecu that are not there just the ecu sees them.
best of luck fella
