Just replaced the thermostat on my 325i and when I removed the old one it basically sprung off the thermostat housing, but once replaced the housing back on no problem with no resistance.
Is this a sign that the old stat was stuck? Never replaced one before so don't really know for sure.
Here's hoping its fixed the overheating issue as if not the water pump is next.

The thermo wouldn't spring out under normal circumstances but if it was installed backwards it might due to the "0" ring being on the wrong side, it can be checked by sitting it in boiling water for a few minutes to see if it opens.
I guess you've already eliminated the viscous fan.

If it ain't broke..

Viscous is good and now with the thermostat I'm thankfully getting a good reading on the gauge, generally dead in half way. Which is a result as I wasn't wanting to do the water pump as its a PITA.
I think I need a new set of clocks though, the temp gauge bounces about on the slightest bump and the brass nut has been tightened, the brown sensor replaced as it was faulty and the wiring all checked at both the sensor and the round plug.
At least that way I can get rid of the pish white dials that have been budged on at some
Point.
