Got an intermittent problem with the speedo. It usually doesn't work, but after 40mins of continuous driving (usually motorway) it springs into life and will continue to work until I park the car up. Then it won't work again until the next continuous drive.
I'm ruling out the usual corroded wire as even when the speedo needle is dead, the trip meter/odometer is still working and clocking up the miles.
Anyone got any ideas if there could be a problem with cluster?
Cheers

Have a look at the solder joints on the speedo circuit board that secure the pins that plug into the cluster main circuit board.
Undo the screws on the back of the cluster case that are directly behind the speedo, plus all the ones that hold the front and back halves of the whole cluster together, pull the two halves apart, then just pull out the speedo.

I have same symptoms. As the car was up on stands we changed the sensor in the diff but that didnt work. As Brian said, its more than likely a dry solder joint on the board. Trouble is it may be very difficult to trace. It may not be noticeable even with a glass. What usually happens is that the heat within the cluster cavity increases with a run and the current passing thru the joints eventually causes the dry joint to make contact. Once power and heat has gone from around it, it opens up again. All you can do is get an iron and resolder as many of the main input/output joints as you can(especially the diff sensor input). Cars of the age of ours will suffer these problems more and more. Its the nature of the beast..

Thanks guys
I'll pull the cluster out in the next couple weeks and check it out. Might need to buy a new soldering iron....
