AC conversion from R12 to R134a - anyone done it?

Hi all,

I know, most of you probably don't bother with AC living in a colder climate, but during this time of the year in this neck of the woods, it's almost a matter of survival.

My Touring came with the original AC setup, which used R12, no longer available. The system was not holding any gas, but was deemed ok after I took it to a local quick service shop and they put it under vacuum for quite a while (over half an hour). The compressor is also kicking in, but the system won't blow any cold air.

I've done a bit of research and it seems that my compressor is R134a-compatible (at least it's not on the list I saw of models that needed converting), but there are adjustments to be made.

My questions are two-fold:

- First, what exactly is needed to adapt the system to R134a? Aside from the plug adapters, naturally. Drying container? Pressure switches? Expander valve? What? And where can I get it at reasonable prices? This E30 was a project on a budget, but it's getting a bit out of hand, so I'd like to contain spendings as much as possible.

- Second, if anyone's done it, how did you solve the issue with the top line to fit the adapter to the plug, which completely gets in the way of the bonnet strut?

Any feedback on this is most welcome.

The kit was about £100 when I did mine a few years ago, the adaptor doesnt get in the way of the bonnet either

with time and patience it will work.

the drier can and the aux fan are the two items that make the difference.
