will a manual gearbox from an E39 535 v8 fit the the 4 litre m60 engine?

Yes should do.
The v8 engines share a bell housing and crank pattern across most of the range.

M62 to m60 should work, you just need to check the position of the crank sensor on a m62 it is on the flywheel and m60 on the crank damper from memory
