managed to get a m40 touring on the cheap with no mot and tax. its been laid up for a while.
so anyway half way home the temp gauge shot up, wasnt 100 legal so just man'd up and carryed on, got it home and the water was empty. my brother was behind and said when i first pulled off there was blue smoke, so i thought great headgasket fooked. checked the oil cap no water residue or mayo, and check the dipstick and the same story. topped it up with water and it seems to be holding it and not over heating, but still smokin quite bad, but its not blue smoke or black just white. engine starts and runs lovely too, smoove as oooot. its got near 200k on the clock but the its had full bmw service history till 150k, so surely cant be a fucked engine??? (unless some chava has had it, but doubt it)
soooo heres my thoughts
1.blue smoke was just moisture where its been sat?
2.heaters are blowing cold, checked the fan and it has no resistance, so thats the over heating solved??
3.could the smoke be fucked injecters?
sorry for the essay lol
any help much apreciated
good to be sat in another e30 (sort off lol)
back in the game with another heap lol m40 smokin like a...

Could be anything. Heaters blowing cold could be an air lock, which leads to overheating; but the airlock could have happened because a blown headgasket or cracked head leaked all the coolant out, and just "topping it up" didn't allow you to bleed the airlock.
You need to whip the sparks out and see if there's any signs of oil being burnt in the cylinders; that would give you a better idea of whether your smoke is really "blue" or not. But a cracked head could still allow water to be getting into the cylinders without it necessarily mixing with the oil.
You need to do a compression test on all cylinders to ascertain the state of this engine. Guesswork is great, but at the end it's still just guesswork.

My M40 smoked quite badly when I bought it...turned out that it needed new valve-stem seals.
With your overheating though you may have damaged something!
