Check the connection of the green/black wire to the starter motor and bulkhead plug.

Brian will be along soon to give chapter and verse.

Brianmoooore wrote:Check fuse 17 (30A), and if that's OK, pull out relay K5, identify pins 30 and 87 (marked on the case), and use a short piece of wire to link together these two pins of the relay's socket. If that brings the windows to life, do the same thing with K7, and see if that sorts the door mirrors (and the heater fan?)
If linking out these two relays sorts the problems, turn your attention to the black/green wire going to the starter motor.

Bin the Haynes. It's only accurate for E30 models made on the third Thursday of August 1983, and even then only the red ones.

"Check the wire" means find both ends and make sure they're connected, stick a multimeter across it to check it hasn't broken internally, and then clean up the plugs from corrosion and make sure they're tightened properly.

Your starter motor should have three wires going to it. An enormous thick one straight to the battery, a medium sized one, and the tiny thin wire which is the black/green.

no I've got 4 going to mine got the big black one a red one and 2 small black ones I take it the bottom small one is the signal to the solinoid and the higher one is this black and green one although it's black or has it got a coating on it well anyway there all connected
where does the black and green one go to is it the fuse box
give me some idea where to trace it to

Four wires to the starter motor is correct. The red one is from the alternator, and connects to the same terminal as the big black one from the battery. It's just a way of connecting the alternator to the battery and save a bit of heavy wire.
The coloured wires to the smaller terminals do have a black outer sheath on them - the one you want is the one with the smallest terminal on the end.
The problem is very unlikely to be at the fusebox end, and far more likely to be where the wire joins the terminal or where the terminal is attached to the solenoid.

It means it isn't (electrically) connected to the solenoid. Take it off and clean it off.

Thanks very much, I've just cured my Windows/Heater fault by reading this, the starter motor terminal wire had worked loose (god knows how), tightened up the 8mm nut, hey presto, everything works as it should, again!
