The E36 compact fit but you will have wider track at the rear requiring wheels with an E36 offset (much higher than E30) and with 5-studs, whereas E30 wheels are 4 studs. You'll also have to change the output flanges on the differential to the E36 compact type.
If you're not doing a 5-stud swap on the front too (expensive), best just looking for a set of rear-disc arms from an E30. Plenty sets around and they arn't silly money. Your 316i probably has solid discs at the front, swapping these for vented discs with the wider calipers to suit would be a much more worthwhile mod than arsing around with rear discs from a compact.
