Drove to Bath last night, and teh car wouldn't warm up till I got there. Drove all teh way there with the temp just out of the blue. Then when I got to Bath, the temp rose to over the middle mark, then when I drove back, it went back to about a 1/4. What is causing this and will this affect fuel consumption?

THermostat. I've come across lots of BMW thermostats where the bridge piece thet holds the fixed end of the wax cartridge has broken on one side.
Gives just these symtoms.

Is it hard to replace? If I'm thining rightly, this affects fuel consumption too yeah?
