Hello all.

Can anyone give me tips on tuning my M10 (carburetor beast).
I have heard that you can fit a webber carb and a new cam and get around 160BHP. If this is the case then which webber do I need? Which cam? And where do I get hold of these and what are cost implications?
I would get second hand stuff if poss as budget is reasonable (too low for engine swap mind).

The car is to be used as a road car mainly but might take it for some track fun if its quick enough!

Thank you.

hey mate,

You wont get anywere near 160bhp from just a cam and the weber downdraught upgrade carb.
to get 160bhp your gonna have to rebuild the whole engine to 2.0l spec with wild cam, twin carbs, 4 branch manifold and head work etc.. (sound familiar anyone lol)

If your after just afew nice upgrades then i'd say the weber upgrade is a good choice but many will disagree. If you have a look on ebay ive seen afew on there but these will probably need reconditioning/rebuilding. The m10s also respond well to cams but you wont be able to go too wild without twin carbs to fuel it.

Hi,

Cheers mate, had a look on ebay and there are a few 40 DCOE Webbers going. Is there a particular onwI need to suit the car?

Can anyone suggest a few mods that are fairly cheap and effective (criteria of all car mods then!!!!) for my M10?

Thanks

if you want to run dcoe 40's you'll need to get the inlet manifolds which can be hard to come by. you'll also need to change to an electric fuel pump and upgrade the ignition system.

Ive got this weber carb on my car at the mo http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... eName=WD4V (its not twin carbs it a twin choke carb) Ive got a KnN filter on there and a free flowing back box. It doesnt make mega power but its abit quicker than standard and sounds really nice.

Here is a good site for general M10 tuning, in 2 litre guise, tho you can apply most to 1.8.- http://www.bimmers.com/02/upgrades/engine.html
Also for electronic ignition this is a good value upgrade:
Bosch premium distributor cap part no. 03-010
Bosch premium rotor button part no. 04-033
Bosch Red coil part no. 00013
A good set of hi performance leads eg. Accel 300+ Ferro Spiral race wires
Autolite AR52 race plugs gapped at .050
You can get the info and order the whole package from this site
http://www.e21parts.net/amproducts/proignition.htm
Also depending on your piston set up you can pull the head and have 15thou machined off to bump up compression and put a nice 292 degree cam in. Take your pick depending on budget, Schrick, Piper, Top End Performance, Korman etc., etc., No excuses for not getting that M10 cranking now!

Would this ignition system be advisable for mine duane? Im getting told that i NEED mappable ignition to get it to run properly. having a read around this doesnt seem to be the case but need to make sure to really get it going!

Yes this would work well for your engine Si, I can't see why you would NEED mappable ignition tho could be an advantage. Have a look at the site, these guys run autocross and say its the best ignition set up they have tested. Are you running fuel injection or carbs? What cam have you gone with?

Yeah, with that set up I can't see any NEED for mappable ignition. Tho I haven't had much experience with it. Go the M10!
