Hi

I have a 1993 318 tourer and the headlamps are very low, ive checked the back of the headlamps and it looks like the motors are doing nothing, switch isnt making any difference. Ive looked on the net and looks like this is a common problem. Can I remove the auto adjustment and adjust the lamps to a fixed position??

The hydraulic adjusters on the headlamps have a knurled plastic ring around them, which is a fine adjustment. Unfortunately, when they've failed, the correct position is usually just outside of the range of this knob.
Fortunately, the threaded steel rod that goes from the cylinder, forwards to the headlamp, is for coarse adjustment, so wind these steel rods out a couple of turns or so, then finish the adjustment with the knurled rings.
