I think it's a 320i but only because of the battery being in the engine bay unless it's a Tourer?
This should work: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c5/Da ... SIE018.jpg

The inlet manifold is a 325i item.

Inlet manifold looks like 325, but that's not conclusive. Look above exhaust port 2 as I said.

Have looked above ports and there are no markings, the previos owner had a new bare cylinder head via Europarts installed if that makes a difference.
I've taken some close ups but cant get photos on.

It looks like a 2.5 to me, the dizzy cap, the reservoir on the passenger's side, the way the water pipes are distributed...

at the bottom of this little message, there's a tag that says 'PM' press it, then send me the last 7 digits of your chassis number, then I'll let you know what size engine was originally fitted to this car.

Do you have the receipt for the new head???
In your picture, it looks like your valve in the vacuum hose to the brake servo is busted...

He knows it's supposed to be a 325. We're trying to work out if someone has slipped a 2 litre in.JOSEMI wrote:It looks like a 2.5 to me, the dizzy cap, the reservoir on the passenger's side, the way the water pipes are distributed...

The fact that it's had a new head suggests it may be a 2.5, since these crack heads far more frequently than 2.0s.
The most likely reason for swapping in a 320, would be because of a cracked head on the 325.

Found receipt for 325i/525i M20 Ԛ£160 instead of Ԛ£706 BMW one, ouch.
Valve in the vacuum??? i've just had a look and am none the wiser. This is my first "Classic" and am a total beginner. I'm still waiting for my Haynes to come through.

Brian is the 320 ECU ok with the 325? or should I get a new one. Also what is the other unit behind the glove box?

Bentley is the manual to get, you can buy it through the zone, from the front page.

It will run, but not how it should, you should get a 325i ECU in there as soon as really.DazzyA wrote:Brian is the 320 ECU ok with the 325? or should I get a new one. Also what is the other unit behind the glove box?
The other ECU above the glovebox is for the ABS system.

hmmmmmm
Brian, if they swaped heads would the performance be affected then, say to the 2L parameters ?? - I assume it would but I am no expert.

2.0 litre heads and 2.5 litre heads have completely different combustion chambers, and are not interchangeable. Can't work out whether it would go bang the first time it turned over, or have an extremely low comp. ratio.JOSEMI wrote:hmmmmmm

Regards the engine ECU. If it's the wrong one, it would run as Simon says, but the maps would be all wrong.

Edited: about the compression, you're the expert. In my opinion it would be 'bang' or the engine leaking all over the place, but I guess that's an over simplified vision of what would happen.

I was going to say 'drive the car to see what performance gives' but now it would be out of the question in this scenario. Although if they converted a 2.5 to a 2.0 then it would be clear what engine they put in ? I mean as to see what engine is DazzyA got in his car.2.0 litre heads and 2.5 litre heads have completely different combustion chambers, and are not interchangeable. Can't work out whether it would go bang the first time it turned over, or have an extremely low comp. ratio.

I must admit she dosen't sound like a 2L she has a real deap growl but seems sluggish at low revs then the power just builds and builds. So I should get a 2.5L ECU then?

I believe you just need a 325i chip, the ECU's are the same... could be wrong!

I guarantee that inlet manifold is a 325i. A 320i has small 'kinks' in those 6 silver runners while the 325i has them all smooth like the ones in the picture

Spoke to the previos owner and he has emailed a copy of an Invoice from BM spares of Harlow with a 325 M20 engine #22134234 so am happy it is a 2.5 L phew. So what about the ECU i have different views, are they the same or should i change. I was only after the chip to get rid of the flat spots and have a better idle.
