I'd be interested in peoples view on the pro's & cons' of each of these as daily drivers.
Also the same on manual vs auto boxes.
Cheers.

not much power difference between all 3 engines is there? was told the 320 is a pointless engine.

all the tourings are set up with discs all round, large arbs, and suspension, .
it depends what your going to use it for, if its a cheep run around 316 or 318, dont bother with the 320 as its not great power for the fuel consumption , might as well have the 325i
and for me i dont like autos any way, but stay away from auto in the 316/18

316 and 318 will be more economical than the 320.
Manual box will be more economical and faster than the Auto in any of them.
Personally of the 3 I'd have a manual 320. A well looked after one will feel and sound much better to drive than any 4 pot.

I weighed up the same issue end of last year, ended up getting a 318i Touring. The 316 felt slow, to me, whereas the 320 felt barely faster than the 318. The 318 felt the best combination for me of reasonable pace and reasonable economy. Mine has a nice quick gearchange and feels plenty nippy on the local country lanes. It's like my 'starter' E30 - if I really take to them I'll probably look to trade up to a 325 later in the year. But for me this is a second car, so maybe I viewed it differently.
So for me the 316 was painfully slow and the 320 was not sufficient advantage over the 318 to be worth the extra fuel consumption.
(Manual in all cases, btw - I didn't even test an automatic as I like a manual box on my 'fun' cars.)
Two months in I'm very happy I went with the 318.

My daily driver/workhorse was a 318i touring for many years, and will be shortly again, when I can get my finger out to finish its restoration.
It's not the fastest thing on the road, but far from the slowest either. It does all that's required of it, with 100% reliability, and is generally a pleasant enough place to be.
