I fitted the z3 lever to my car rencently having done it previously on another car. The effect this time is much less, the throw being longer, the change into 2nd more notchy, and generally its much harder to make a smooth change. The 1.8 I did it on before had 109,000 miles on the clock, the 2.5 I have just done has just 85,000, so I assumed it wouldnt be a case of more wear on a bush somewhere. My mechanic said it may be that because its a bigger engine, its a bigger gearbox and therefore a biger throw? Is this likely, and if so do I need to get the z4 lever discussed before to sort the problem out, or am i onto a loser!!!

thanks

sorry Andrew, just wondering if the gearbox's differ that much in terms of throw between a box from an m40 and the box from an m20, as my old shortshift mod turned out a lot better than my latest one. If this is the case then I am wondering what the solution is, presumably to fit the next shortest lever, of think about bushes etc?

I'd change the bushes if you haven't already done it; that's pretty much as important as the lever itself!

Did you change the white bush what the lever sits in ? If you didnt thatll be the reason why . A mate of mine did the Z3 shift after driving mine but didnt manage to get the bush changed and it feel awful . That bush makes a huge difference .

If you take a look here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=25&fg=05

- part 13 "GEARSHIFT ROD JOINT" - that had huge amounts of play in it on my gear box. Almost a mm gap instead of a nice solid fit. Replacing that made the box feel like new again. Its worth doing the o-rings there too. I also did the bush marked "2" and the thing the ball sits in "6" but they one were still pretty good. Car had 111k on it.
