Would anyone know of why there would be a smell of petrol inside the car. It's not there all the time, only becomes noticable after accelerating hard. As i say somedays it's a strong ,smell others there is nothing at all, if i'm just toddling around in the car it's ok but when i put the foot down that seems to be when the smell of fuel comes into the car. Anyone else had this?

I had this problem a little while ago
turned out to be the 2 fuel lines that go to the fuel injector rail

repair kits cost about Ԛ£4 from the dealers

I get a fumey smell in my car, but only when I switch the engine off, I thought that was just the E30 smell cos my last one was the same.

mine also had a leak from under the manifold.

if the smell is when you have stoped, check the fuel pipes (hoses) under the car.

I think this must be quite common,

My 325i, has been to the BM dealers twice in it's life (according to the history) to sort this problem,

once a corroded fuel line and second a leaky inlet manifold gasket.

Good luck tracking down

Are fuel lines/hoses expensive? Just wondered if it would be worth replacing them anyway seeing as they are 15 years old (on my car anyway).

2 main places for E30 leaks are around the tank inlet, that builds up with mud and crap, often more noticeable when you have a full tank or corner hard.

The other is the hoses that clamp onto the injector rail, they're under pressure and often perish and crack from the heat.

Might also be worthwhile checking the fuel filler neck . I had a petrol smell from when i bought the car . Replaced usual hoses which to be fair were perished , but to no avail . Eventually went to fill up with fuel one day , put in Ԛ£30 of petrol and must have left a tenners worth on the floor . Took of the corroded neck on replaced . Touch wood never smelt fuel since .

Also when I had my sport, it was more noticible when my sunroof was open. I use to come in from a drive out stinky as hell! Was just running rich.......exhaust fumes rolling around the back of the car and into the sunroof!!

i've just sorted a similar problems on my wifes E34 525i sport. it was a hardened rubber hose, connecting onto the fuel rail. as it was hardened, tightening the clamps didn't help. took 20 mins to replace and has doubled the fuel economy!!! :?
