My suggestion is - don't bother, theyre a waste of money in my opinion.

The only things that really need cleaning are the injectors and no amount of diluted solvents are gonna clean the crap off the injectors, they need to be ultrasonically cleaned.

I used to clean injectors in the ultrasonic tank at my old work and got it down to an art, took about an hour per set. But I don't have a tank at the new place so I can't do any more :(

Had my injectors cleaned from a place called Oselli Power and they charged me something like Ԛ£90 odd for the 6 injectors and replacing the o rings on them.

Highly recommended as you can really feel the difference

I found cleaning the tank out completely had the best impact. Cleaning injectors is a little pointless when gunk in the fuel is still flowing through them. I've been told once this is finished, I should stick a full tank of high octane in, and a bottle of metho to clear all the water out of the fuel system.

Dont know how it will turn out, but I will in a week or so.

Not sure, I think its being flushed out, fill, shake, and tip style, but thats just the impression I got. "Those who have tools and skill beyond me" are doing the job for a reasonable fee, but I do think it has been taken out.

When it got there they sucked some fuel from the bottom of the tank, and it looked like river sediment mixed with tar. Not particuarly surpised that the fuel system didnt like it.

Also petrol in the Uk is probably the best quality in the world (and we pay for it!) much of the chemicals and cleaners found in redex etc are already in our petrol. We also have a high turn over of petrol, ie it doesn't sit in the stations for very long, meaning its better quality.

If you compare a U.K tank with a US or even some euro ones i'm sure (apart from the possibility of rust...) it will be far cleaner.

When I was in africa, pretty much all cars smoked to some degree, even brand new ones! its just the crap quality of fuel they get

I can't say much for Australian fuel quality. Alot of stations on the river here clearly have water seeping in, and in general, you get what you pay for. And it looks like the previous owner didnt pay much.

The fuel filter is not a foolproof device, and is not designed to keep certain chemicals, suspended substances, and 4 litres of sludge out of the injector rail, particularly after 20 years.

There is also evidence that water has been leaking into the tank through the filler area, hence why I want it un-wetted. It seriously doesnt matter how good your fuel preperation system is. It is designed to remove a level of impurity from fuel. In my case, especially when its below 20 litres, you have 4 parts fuel to 1 part sludge. When its down to the bottom, the car is running on this slop, because it is all that is left.

When BMW designed the car, they didnt take a swamp in the tank into account.

shit the list of vleaning in my car goes on and on... neverending process its leaving me skint !!
I much prefer not to clean the tank myself, I might just try to swap it and that's it !
