Fuel pump woes

chromie 325 wont start at all now and I can hear the absense of the fuel pump kicking in, I never thought that thing was 100% anyway.

My understanding is (this maybe totally misguided) that the chromie 325's had 2 fuel pumps and the facelift m20's had one internal fuel pump.

Please does anyone know if it is possible to swap the tank with an internal pump to the 325, if so what is involved.

Id say yes they can be swapped over but i dont know whats involved.

hi i looked into this a year ago for the same reasons fitting a single pump to the tank is to difficult as the feed pump in the tank currently is much smaller. the only practical way to upgrade is to source a later tank. I eventually broke down and replaced both pumps. the in tank unit is rather pricey.

In tank pump is a direct replacement (apart from the wiring and plumbing) as long as the cup in the bottom of the tank is present. The fixing hole in the tank is the same whether the car has an in tank HP pump, an in tank LP pump, a pick up pipe for an external HP pump or a pick up pipe for a carb. engine.

Well, I have bought a like for like replacement. I thought I'd swap the internal pump first as it would be the easiest. I got curious wondering if it was a fuel pump/sender or just a sender so I took the one I removed from my car apart after swaping them. It looks like just a sender to me which makes me wonder again. If there is an internal pump which everyone seems to say there is on a prefacelift m20, where is it. There is only one hatch to open on the rear seat and this sender is all thats there.

The external one is where I would expect to see it, close to the rear arch.

hi mine is an SA car and mine has a pump and sender in the tank and it looks nothing like yours

Some pre facelift set ups used a pump in the tank to feed the external one and some didn't. I've never seen anything definitive to say which models have what, or what the consequences are of using the 'wrong' one, other than an external pump used with an internal pump will run very noisily if the in tank pump fails.
The easy way to tell which you have is by looking at the electrical connectors. Yours has only one three pin plug for the level sensor. If it was combined with a pump there'd be a second two pin plug.
Fitting a post facelift pump is the complete solution.
