Took the right side skirt off the Touring today, and discovered a fat patch of rust at the back end. It spread from the wheel arch to the other side of the jacking point; or at least I presume that's what the solid steel plate is.
I cut the outer sill away and thankfully the inner sill is still good, so I'm building a repair, but that steel plate is shot. It looks like a miniature version of a suspension top mount; a big hole with a plastic cap inside it.
I can't find it on OEM, and it'll be a pain in the arse to fabricate. Considering it's also a rot trap, is it worth replacing, or should I just plate over it?
Sill rust - REAL jacking point?

I read somewhere on the zone that what we generally refer to as jacking points are put there to locate the body on a jig as goes down the production line.
Schadenfreude - the German's haven't got a word for that.

These are the spots of the factory jack, or at least one of them is.
There's two things at the rear end of the sill; a metal strip held on with two bolts, and a round hole plugged with plastic. It's this round hole thing that's giving me a headache.

I think he means the 2 elongated-ish plates on the sills, there's a plastic insert in them from memory.

Sorry, my description wasn't great so have a stolen photo:

See that odd metal shape of the left? On my car that's got a hole in the centre, and a plug that connects to a supporting bracket INSIDE the sill; I presume it's the jacking point, to give extra strength. I don't know whether to replace it or just plate over where it was.
And those rear beam strengthening plate bolts; utter coonts. One had rounded off, and cutting a slit, grinding flats on the oustide, and even welding a nut to it didn't work. Bastard bolt will have to be drilled out now.

With reference to the rear beam lower plate retaining bolts.
I have sliced the captive nut off the back, but take care not to cut into the lower plate. Then on re-build a nice shiny M8 stainless nut and bolt.

Yeah, cutting off the bolt is going to be the only option, it seems. I can't be arsed with easy-outs.
I'll probably just put in some 2mm plate as well to replicate the jacking point; I'm not paying 20 quid to BMW for some fancy folded steel if I can bash my own with a hammer
It's just a new headache. I wanted to have the first coat of primer on the car this week, and this has set me back by a few days.
