wasnt the chain,
had timing chain tensioner replaced, and the cars running like new, amazin cant believe how tight and responsive (and non rattly) the engine is on a 14 year old car 8O , had the sump stripped off at the same time as the tensioner was done), upper lower gaskets replaced (was leaking really bad) was also missing a bolt on the upper sump.

found a post that i cant seem to find again that talked about an 'inner sump' referred to finding bolts rattling around inside the sump itself, It seems that i had that too as the mechanic found quite a few lying loose, donno if this can cause any harm (all back in the correct places now though)

blasted up and down the bypass in the early hours last night, hadnt driven it hard since i got it as i was getting loads o troubling noises had nasty oil leak and the steering was really juddery after 80mph but pushed it to bout a ton ten and not a wobble (not enough road between speed cameras to max the revs in 4th), and the power steering now doesnt try and fight against me when im on full lock either, smooth as you like. No idea whats sorted the steering but ive now got a fully serviced 69k 318is in immaculate condition barring a few small rust spots for Ԛ£1350 including all work done. amazing!. (i was an alfa romeo driver and lost an engine at 15k cost Ԛ£3000 to fix and felt the car was already bit past it at 40k an 3n half years old when i sold it, loved it, couldnt trust it, no basis for a realtionship of any kind)
..
sorry for the ramble im just well chuffed, thought i'd bought a lemon :D
