E36 m42 gearboxes have different ratios than the e30 ones.

E36 boxes are 1:1 5th whereas e30 boxes are 1:1 4th, with an overdrive 5th.

the box will fit but you'll need to change the diff ratio to get it geared properly..

What's the difference between an overdrive 5th and a proper 5th?
