Oh ok, i assumed only very little metal would have to be taken off? and id do it neatly and sand/repaint the edges etc? The actual shelf can be picked up cheap second hand so i can cut a spare one up?

i've done an okayish job of cutting the metal out using a dremel to fit my 6x9's its quite awkward to do because of some edges, havent got round to smoothing it off yet though, i can upload a picture tommorow if you'd like.

I have some experience of this. . . .
I got kenwood 7"x10"s to fit in my 1984 320i without cutting at all, didn't need spacers to lift the speakers or anything. It was a tight fit, but the magnets were not touching anything when i'd finished.
I removed the speakers when the car was scrapped, and recently tried to get them in my 1989 325i. . . . no chance, the parcel shelf itself, and the metal underneath are a totally diferent profile on facelift cars. Went with 1.5" mdf spacers covered in vinyl to raise them up in the end. Looks alright, i'll put some pics up tonight.

cheers for the help, mines a prefacelift so it night be easier then if its like you say?
dont cut the metal, some pillock did that before i got my car pretty sure vibrations are coming from that area, just get boxes drill a small hole for the wires,
i got these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-x-9-inch-Ca ... 2eb73b92d1
there big height wise, but what i did is cut the bottom inch or so off, took the parcel shelf off lined the boxes up behind the headrests, and screwed them in place from under the shelf all around, put the shelf back and screwed the speakers down,
the back of the box is slanted downwards so blends in nicely, its not just a square box,
you can just about make it out in the pics below

5.25" standard speak and cutting out for 6x9 is a significant modification. Are you running a sub? if not just put the 6x9's in boxes (readily available) and amp them up.
If you are running a sub, upgraded 5.25" speakers should be all that is required.

with my one previous owner, drilled a load of holes and the cutting is ridiculous, when i crank it up i can hear vibrations coming from the back, everything else is solid, i assume its the gigantic holes whch have been cut outtuna wrote:Never had an problems since i cut the metal, and im pretty certain its safe to do so.
get the holes welded closed? if thats even possible anyway. Maybe some of the cut out metal has fallen down the back of the metal sheet behind the rear seats, i can imagine that'd make a vibrating/rattling noise.
i mean other side of that metal sheet inside the boot. I dunno if its the same for your car but on the otherside therse some cardboard like material that is placed over the whole sheet, pherhaps down there as it seems pretty inaccesible

cutting holes will have no real negative effect other than it is a poor way to do the job, and is more difficult than making a spacer.
the speakers i fit were extreamly deep and the magnet was very big so i made two spacers from 1 inch plywood.
the first was a plywood sheet cut roughly to the size of the metal panel under the parcel shelf cover, i bolted this wooden piece to the metal panel (there are plenty of free holes to use) then you need to position the speakers to best fit the existing indentations in the metal panel. once positioned i cut out holes for the speakers in the wooden piece and bolted the wood to the metal panel.
you can see the wooden panel under the parcel shelf (it is not bolted doen yet in this pic

next i needed more spacers so i decided to fit them on top of the shelf, i cut out rings from the same plywood, sanded them and painted them black with a rattle can, (but you can probably just buy spacers)

then its a case of cutting the parcel shelf to suit, i needed to move the speakers very far outwards (i.e. toward the seatbelt reel) and thus needed to cut this part out, this is due to the magnet size, but if yours are not quite so big even this job will be easy.
and sprayed black

i dont have a shot in the car but i basically used long srcrews to fix the speaker to the rings, through the shelf and into the wooden panel underneath.
it is all very tight once in, and no vibrations, and best of all no ugly holes cut into your car. plus you can see by my pics all done in an easy DIY style!
