About a week or so ago I asked about a ticking noise and i was wondering if I needed a valve adjustment. I decided to go ahead and do the vavle adjustment anyway since it is standard maintenance. I picked up two manuels from the car's previous owner, neither of them much good but still providing some information. Problem is, each manuel gave a different spec for the valve clearence, one said 0.25mm and the other 0.30mm when cold. I did the adjustment this morning at 0.25mm. Is this OK or is that to tight? What does everyone here set the clearance at?

0.25mm is correct, always make sure the engine is stone cold.

0-25mm is the correct cold clearance, 0-30mm is hot.
All mine get set to 10 thou. cause I'm to tight to buy a set of metric feeler gauges.
That is for the M20 engine by the way, M10 is slightly tighter at 0-20mm cold.

i did the adjustment sunday morning and i hadn't driven the car since the night before so the engine should have been cold enough. I set the clearence to a tight 0.25mm. I think im going to do it again and set the drag a little looser. What kind of damage is caused by having them too tight?

Too tight will burn valve seats and wear cam, but I doubt that you've set them that tight.

The problem with this and any presision measuring is defining "slight drag" I set them so it took so effort to move the feeler gauge. I think that might be a little tight so im going to check them again next weekend.
