I got a foglight a few weeks back when because one of mine is cracked. Wanted to put the lamin-x film on them this evening and noticed they are different  One is darker than the other, grey vs black sealant and mine had foam type material around the glass where as the darker one has a much harder flexible plastic surround. Also notice the bulb caps are different.

Anyone know why they might be different?

Can't say I've noticed anything like this with my own stock, but BMW sourced their parts from more than one supplier for many parts (headlamps: Hella or Bosch; instrument cluster: Motormech or something I'm too pi**ed to remember, brake callipers, etc.).
Maybe just different makes?

Must be different suppliers, I'll have a better look at them tomorrow for any brand markings.

Also, are they both genuine bmw parts? Not sure of any after market copy lights where made but who knows... Do both have part numbers on, if so, what are they?

Had a look at them there, the glass on both is stamped ZKW and they both have the same markings on them. The sealant one one if black, the other grey. My ones had a foamy kind of gasket around them, the new lamp I got had a much harder plastic one. The caps on both are also different. Theres a sticker with a part number on the darker one, the sticker is missing on the other set.

Only thing I can think of is maybe that someone previously replaced the glass with something else and used a grey sealant instead of black. From googling, all fog light units look to have black sealant holding the glass on.

I'll have to either get another fog or new lenses for them.

Not sure Rav, I think it's glass, it didn't scratch when I wiped it with a scotch bright pad. Seems a waste to break the glass in the good lens for the sake of putting new plastic lenses on.
