What are the symptoms of a knackered diff?

I've got a droning noise which appears over about 35mph and peaks at about 60mph and fades away after that. Also gets worse going round right bends and dissappears going round lefts. The noise is road speed related rather than engine speed.

It's definitely not a wheel bearing kind of noise, it's a drone rather than a rumble. But i can't decide whether it's from the front or back - probably the middle!

Have filled the diff with oil although it didn't take much to top it up.

Any ideas please. Driving me mad!

the fact that it is aggravated on corners would typically be a wheel bearing symptom in my opinion mate

I am not 100% but i'm sure a noisy diff is a noisy diff, regardless of the direction of travel

That was my thought, but have had knackered wheel bearings before and the noise is very different.

Have had the car in the air and checked all the wheels for play and free rotation. All seemed good.

Cheers

if you are convinced it is the diff mate, it is probably cheaper to source a decent second hand unit than repair your own, unless you have an LSD.

Not sure at all that it's the diff. That's the problem. Just 99% sure it isn't a wheel bearing. Looking for other ideas really.

No lsd tho, so no great loss if it is bust!
