Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could tell me why my wheels squeek when the car has done a few miles. The whistle-like noise comes up when reducing speed or going slow after it has been warmed up. It is definitely coming from the wheels and is very annoying ! I changed the bearings not long ago, could they be worn bearings again ???
Please help is very, VERY ANNOYING !
Ta Jose

Could be the pads rubbing the disc, after a few miles the discs have warmed and expanded a little?
Might be worth checking.

A mechanic told me exactly the same, so I will certainly check, but why didn't this happen when I first replaced the pads ??

Did you use copper grease on the metal contact areas between pads and calipers, did you scrape all the old brake dust etc from the contact areas of the calipers?

yup, although i got your point now you have both pointed the brakes (and my mechanic too), it looks like its time to tidy up the brakes. I am relieved its not the bearings by the look of it...
Thanks !

A tip I was given a few years back by somone proffesionally involved with braking systems was to not leave your foot on the brake after getting them hot. IE don't come off a motor way and slow down from 70 (yeah right) to a standstill and sit with your foot on the brake pedal as it can cause the pad material to migrate from the pad to the disk and bake onto the disk, causes all sorts of problems apparently, including brake shudder as the disks have a baked on coating of friction material on the surface.
I don't know how your meant to stop your car rolling back into someone elses motor though

Andy,
(sure 70 because the Micra in front of you decided to invade the right side...)
Interesting, its one of those bad bad habits, just to let the foot down, like not lifting the clutch pedal and so on...
I understand what you mean, although it would be a reason to send a complaint to the company that made the pads... they should withstand the heat shouldnt they ??

Technically, you are suppossed to apply the hand brake.........Andy_magic wrote:A tip I was given a few years back by somone proffesionally involved with braking systems was to not leave your foot on the brake after getting them hot. Unfortunatley its a matter of Physics a good few hundred degrees is enough to bake most things on permanently, one look at my Mrs's cooking is proof of that.

I find the car hard to control when handbraking at 70, not too bad when you have the road to yourself though. I've found the police take a dim view of it too, might be an idea to use it whilst stationary thoughTechnically, you are suppossed to apply the hand brake.........
