Exhaust fumes

My 318is's exhaust fumes smell very strong as if it's running rich where should I start to look .

blue temp sensor, Co2 mixture, injectors, air flow meter, plugs

Start simple check plugs, co2 etc, then you can check the simple quick things first, otherwise i would say its the dreaded blue temp sensor.

Also is it definately exhaust fumes, or is it a smell of fuel. If fuel could be a blocked breather pipe on the tank, possibly a fuel leak (i had one of those) prior to the injector rail.
