Someone posted a while ago about experiencing a noise when coming off the accelerator. I had a similar noise, when you lift off the accelerator above 3000 rpm. Thought it might have been the centre bearing on the prop shaft but it turns out to have been a loose bracket on the exhaust. The mechanic drilled out the old rusted bolt and fitted a new one and the noise is now gone. Just something the check for.

This will be the bracket that mounts to the rear of the gearbox. It will rust through / work loose again at some point. I've removed the remains of it completely on two of my E30s and never had any problems with the exhaust.

Brian,you were lucky then!
On two of my previous E30's I've had the gearbox exhaust mount break, and i too left it,the result was the downpipes cracking, both in the same place.
Learn't my lesson though, when my Tourers one snapped,my bodywork geeza fabricated me a new for a fiver.

fair play, mines a bit crusty too, doesnt actually bear any weight though, with the exhaust floating above it by about 1-2 mm.
but "tings" when i hit a certain note on the exhaust

Its been missing from one of my Tourings for about 35000 miles now, since I fitted a new OEM exhaust. No sign of any cracking yet.
Should be a MOT failure point though, if anyone noticed.

Bracket doesn't cost much, ( Its listed in the GSF on-line catalogue, but the quality of the last one I bought left a little to be desired), but it WILL work loose and rattle again.

I believe dealer ones cost about Ԛ£12,the only reason I had one made was purely as my mate was welding up my exhaust he said i'll make a new bracket up as well for a fiver,so i thought I might as well have it done.
