just noticed my headlight wobbles- euro smiley type with auto leveling thingy that no longer works - looks like the headlight has detached itself from the leveller thingy, how easy is it to convert to the manual adjustment system ?, also whats an easy way to make sure the headlights arent pointing too high /low ?

Mine have busted too....although if I could get the leveller to work again, I would prefer that as I have a new under-steering panel which has the light adjuster hole already cut out!!

IIRC, you can manually adjust them but would have to have the auto-leveller still attached!

Others on here will definitely know!

Best way to check is to pull the car upto a wall or garage door when on level ground and check the level of the lights, just use some common sense, with E30 lamps, the line of the lights is very prominent, and easy to see.

You can pull the silly in car adjuster system out, and use some manual ones, which would have been fitted to earlier E30's.

The problem you have though sounds like the small plastic locaters that the adjusters sits in, these always turn brittle with age, so get some new ones from the dealers part no 63 12 1 386 616, and no more wobbly lights!

You can get new adjusters from the dealer as well, as the originals have probably rusted and seized. Treat the threads to some copper grease.
Don't be in too much hurry to dispode of the levelling cylinder assemblies at the headlamps, even if they don't work, as they have a reliable, non seizing adjuster built into them (the knurled outer barrel of the cylinder.)
If this adjustment doesn't give enough range, then adjust the threaded rod to bring it into range.
If you really want reliable adjustable headlamps, then the electric adjusters from an E34 or E36 can be fitted.
