willnz wrote:You mean the oil drain pipe in the centre of the manifold? It is spring loaded, you twist it with a set of plumbers pliers/visegrip downwards into the block till it comes free of the manifold at the top.
Thanks, done it now :)

When you come to re-assemble,compress the spring with two or three cable ties, and do not forget nice new 'O' rings at both ends!

And Will,it's part of the crankcase breather system, the oil drain is on the lower, exhaust, side of the head.... :D

the oil is pumped up to the head and then runs down this tube back into the block...it is dual purpose...

Spot on. It's an oild drain and they leak like a seive if not located properly.

Agreed.

But,if this was the only way oil drained back to the sump from the cylinder head, every time you removed the rocker cover you would coat the exhaust manifold with oil..... winkeye
Therefore, the OIL DRAIN is located on the exhaust side of the head,as I posted earlier, and as agreed by Will!

Malcolm. Accept there are more than 1 drain and be done with it. Thats what we are saying. The way you are putting it there is only one oil drain. Which there is not! It would take an age for the oil to drain to the sump when an oil change is done if there was only one.

Correct!

There is a whole row of holes to drain oil back to the sump,on the 'low' side of the head. Now remember,Trevor, that BMW engines all sit at an angle in the bay?

That angle is biased toward the exhaust side,is it not?

Ergo, the oil drains from the exhaust side, and the crankcase is VENTED from the higher, inlet side!

It's all perfectly logical,I bet even your bum boy will agree with me.
