Ive just driven 30 miles with no indicaters, not good. They were working fine last night, everything else is ok. Hazard warning works ok, lights flash with the alarm activation but no response when the stalk is used. All fuses are intact. Any ideas please folks ?

Fuse 4, 15A, is the fuse for the indicators. Check it very carefully. Often blows on late cars because of problems with the glove box light.
Other usual cause of total indicator failure is a dud hazard light switch, but there are plugs and sockets on the steering column that don't normally give trouble, but may have not been pushed together properly at some time.

Cheers, I'll double check that fuse when i get a chance later. Funnily enough I did notice last night that my glove compartment light wasnt on but i didnt realise there may be a link. But having said that I'm sure the indicators were ok after I was in the glove box ! I'll report back.

Ta,

PJ.

Spot on Brian, although the fuse looks ok indicators work with replacement fuse...phew, can go home safely now ! The light in the glove box is hanging away from the switch, bulb looks ok will it be alright if I put it back ? I'm gonna leave it til later though time to go now.

Thanks Brianmooore, :D

Pull the fuse again before you put the glove box light back,or you will pop the fuse again. Don't be tempted to leave the bulbout either, as the holder tends to short circuit when empty.
This one catches quite a few people out, because the handbook doesn't list fuse 4 as being for the glovebox light.
In earlier cars (up to some time in 1988) it was on fuse 21 and the handbook wasn't updated after it was changed.

Do you have a special edition BMW with functioning indicators fitted then? Maybe it's an ex police car or something?

hi mate, i was drivin around for ages with no indicators. arm out the window job. found it, i replaced my glovebox, and there was a loose wire touching the metal catch. sometimes putting a new fuse in worked then that was it. worth a try for def mate. john

Wiring's OK, bits are probably assembled wrong inside the bulb/switch unit.
