Shine a torch on the display. Can you still see the display dimly?
If so, the light bar in it has failed.
You can either buy a new one from BMW at around £30, or solder a couple of new bulbs into the old one for around £1.
If you go or the new one, I'll give you a couple of pounds for the old one.

This has happened today to my 6-button, I can see that the digits dimly. I did the torch test, there was no change in the brightness
Is there a procedure somewhere for repairing the light bar? I did not find anything in the Wiki.
