hi,if i where to fit 17" wheels to my e30 with 205/40r17 tyres what offset would most suit this application?

215/40 is better.

Depends on the width of the alloys, ET25 is standard fitment so somewhere near that.

The offset on an e30 is a normaly about ET25, a lot of more recent cars with a 4 x 100 bolt pattern are closer to ET40. I have 7x17 with 205 width tyres and an offest of ET15. It is OK, but after fitting 40 mm lower springs ,I did have to roll the font right arch at the top to stop rubbing when I went over mental high speed bumps and curbs.
