More smells...........and odd clunks

Occasionally after going on a short run, stopping then starting the car, I get a vague smell of petrol (sometimes) or semi burnt oil-ish smell (like an oily exhaust fume). both are very faint.

I've had a good root around the engine bay and I can't see any leaks.

The back box is blowing slightly which may account for the fumes, but that said, why only on second start up?

Could the fuel smell be due to a bit of vapourisation I wonder?

Also, when I come to a stop/slow right down, as the autobox shifts into first there's a little clunk from the back end. Prop/diff joint maybe?

Any ideas/suggestions/info would be much appreciated

particularly about the fuel smell - had a fiesta go up on me once - I thought the orange flashes were because the hazards were on - till the flames started up the inside of the windscreen

But that's another story
