I must confess i havent whole grasped the offset/et thing....
anyway my current 14" cross spokes are et30 and if i got a wheel et 40 i would need a spacer of 10mm - what would happen if i got a wheel that was et 26? would my wheel base just be wider and i would have no rubbing issues?
any explanation greatly appreciated!

It will just stick out further.
Im not sure if it will rub on your wheel arch.
