hi,

i'm currently in the process of doing a 2.7 conversion on my 325 and wanted to know what sort of power gains can be expected. i currently have a six branch full powerflow exhaust system and a chip from atech.

many thanks

Hi rash
It will depend on exactly what 2.7 set up you are running. I.E. What cylinder head (320i, 325i), camshaft, and which 525e bottom end, pistons, rods, throttle body, injectors etc. you have chosen.

As a very rough guide around 190bhp-200bhp should be achievable but without knowing the exact spec and also the condition of the engine it is very hard to say.

Good luck,

James

hi james,

i'm going to use the 325 head, injectors, and throttle body and just the 525e block i've ordered new big ends and main bearings as they were pretty worn on the 525e, also new oil pump.

thanks

Hi Rash,
Are you getting your crank reground too? If you are fitting new bearings it is worth it then speccing the bearings after incase you need a different size. Whilst you are doing this you may as well get your bottom end balanced and lightened. In order to do that you will need to supply an engineering shop with your crank, rods, pistons, flywheel and clutch assy, and your front end pulleys - it is well worth doing if ou have the engine to this level anyway.

Your CR (Compression Ratio) will vary dependent on whether you are using an early or late 525e block, then once again with the 325i head fitted the CR will change again due to the different volume in the combustion chamber of the 325i head vs. the original 525e head (roughly 3cc more per cylinder).

Good luck, with the engine well built and sime nice add ons (6 branch and a remap) you should be close to 200bhp.

Cheers

James

The only hybrid 2.7 I know of getting dyno'd is Daimlerman's. IIRC it gave just shy of 180bhp/190ft.lb using a 731 'head with standard size 320i/323i valves, standard 325i camshaft and 325i inlet. Don't know if he was running a 6-branch at that stage, though.

There was talk of my old engine doing over 200/200 with 731 'head, 273 cam, 325i valves & ports, BTB manifold. I can't confirm or deny it, though, as the block is scrap and the 'head now belongs to JBH.

One day I might get 'round to having my current 2.7 dyno'd, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......
