If you have quite a bad sump gasket leaking can this reduce oil pressure to a level which the sensor would pick up?

Only if it's really pishing out I would have thought, any leak will result in a drop in pressure though.

The oil pump pushes the oil around the engine (a defined series of oil pathways) the oil pressure gauge is attached to these and measures the oil pressure.
The sump although under pressure is a catch pot and hence it will not affect the oil pressure reading because it is on the return feed not the supply.
If you had a pot of oil around the oil pickup and no sump you would still see oil pressure.
Hope that explains

as Karl said.... it wont affect oil pressure..... unless it leaked all the oil and there was none left so zero pressure... but that obviously isnt the case as it would have been dead by now
change the oil pressure switch... they are like Ԛ£3-5 from any motor factors
