This isn't a pint of worthingtons. Play the game and you'll suck sediment, rust and the rest into the filter!

My light never comes on and the most I've ever put in is 48 liters so either its less than 2 litres (15 miles max) or maybe my light bulb is fooked :(

You should have the 63L tank so you have never run it below 15L :wink:

IIRC it is about 7-8L on reserve so maybe 30 miles for a 6 pot, fuel light bingo is never a good idea though...

8O ... really? The fuel guage is well past the red at this point, going off the guage, I thought it was a 50 liter tank?

Should I put a can in the back then and wait and see if the light comes on :D

owners manual says: 316i has a 57 litre tank, and light comes on with approx 6 litres left, so if you're getting 30mpg that's 39miles before you're walking...

If it's the car in your avatar (the touring) then you'll have the larger tank. I've had three E30s in varying states of repair and the fuel light has worked on all of them nomatter what the gauge said. I think most people on here have had the same experience. There are very few threads asking about the fuel light that don't end up with the owner findout out that it is indeed working. (the rest are run over on the motorway when refuelling on the hard shoulder)

Having recently replaced my fuel tank, I have finally let the fuel warning light come on. Numerous receipts for crud-clogged fuel filters prior to this swap were something of an encouragement for the expenditure!

My OBC states a remaining fuel range of approximate 40 miles when the light comes on (325i), but even with a new, shiny tank, I bottled it when the remaining range was given as approx 15 miles.

These figures are of course dependent on driving speed / style.

My advice is to not let your tank run dry, purely because of how much it costs to fill a virtually empty E30 tank! Cost me over £60! 8O

31mpg!!!!! That was including some traffic - 314 miles and I put in 46.2 litres oh yes :cool:

I reckon to get to the light, I'd be past the red mark, past the little white line after it and into thin air, then it would hit the light and turn that on. I might give it a go since I've never gone over 48 litres. At 31mpg I could get a range of almost 450 miles 8O

Not to sure all the info is correct here.

Copied the below from the Wiki, I thought all tourings had rear discs.

320i Touring: RRP £17,330

* Front disc brakes; rear drum brakes
* Twin sleeve gas-pressure shock absorbers
* De-chrome
* Sports steering wheel
* Alloy wheels (6J x 14)
* Check/control system
* Halogen front fog lights
* Headlight cleaning system

run a car low regularly and it'll limit how much builds up in there, it'll be pulled through and trapped gradually over time in the fuel filter which is a service item. the problem comes when somone with a rotten tank who never has less than 1/4 of a tank suddenly runs out and the pump trys to pull all 20 years of crap though in one go.

personally i think there's quite a lot of bullcrap in it too, unless fuel pumps magically only suck fuel from the top of the tank the natural flow and sloshing around of fuel when driving should keep things pretty mixed up anyway.
cheers,

Filled my touring yesterday,the low fuel light had been on for about 5 miles.
Took 52.26 litres (£59!)to the pump cutting and 'rounding up' to the nearest £.So in theory I had almost 10 litres left in the tank,or about 70 miles at 30mpg....in practice,and I have had the blisters to prove this,this car will go no further than 30 miles with the light on,so I reckon that the pump fails to pick up the last gallon or so!
For anyone interested,the thing had run 378 miles from the previous fill-up,that's 32.78mpg overall....

I jumped into mine last weekend tried to start it and it would start and cut out straight away so stuck a bit of fuel in and started and ran no problem... the light wasnt on so im guessing the light has packed up or the guage aint working right
But i think you have about 6 litres from when the light comes on

my old touring 325i did 32-36 miles round town with the light on before it physically ran out. yep i did it twice just to check. had full can of fuel on me both times. so a safe bet would be no more than 25 miles.

Mine has an orange warning light. The book says I can get 30 more miles, but tbh I've usually filled it up before then.

I've ran out of petrol once in the middle of the country side, went with my mates to get some fuel, put it in and the car ran really rough for a few miles, but cleared itself eventually.

My advice, don't run it to the wire. :D

For reference, my bingo light doesn't come on in either my 318i or 325i until the needle has been bottomed out for about 10-20 miles.
