Locating dowel's between the engine & gearbox,
if the one under the starter motor is missing will it stop the starter engaging with the flywheel?

Engine is M52/b28 with M20 flywheel,clutch & starter

Its not making a nice noise :(

Thanks (in advance)

No i mean the locating dowels for the engine to gearbox, story is i was in a rush to get the gearbox on and the engine in the car, so i put the gearbox on with only one locating dowel thinking it would be fine (missing one on the inlet side) engine back in the car blah blah blah then went to start it and it sounds like the pinion is 'hitting' the flywheel but not engaging. (starter is a known good one)
the only thing i can think of is the missing dowel making the engine sit slightly lower down, but is this possible?

Dont want to get the box off again just to put the dowel in if its not needed :(

Dowel's are number 4 in this link

You need the dowels mate, these are what line the box up
