Right,

i have been told by my dads mate (mechanic) that my fuel pump is on the way out! my car is a 318 iS and i was wandering if i could get one from the scrap yard say of a 320i, in other words does it have to be off a 318 iS?

Thanks

all pumps are universal. but the carryers arnt.

the i.s has a twin pipe carryer. the 6 pots have the single pipe carryer. if your good at sodering then just swap the pump onto your carryer.

test the scrappy pump with 12 volts before buying it. After sitting around for a while they sieze up and are absloutly useless.

You can use a two pipe pump in place of a single pipe if you can think of a way to blank off the second pipe. e.g. a short piece of fuel hose and a short piece of 8mm(?) solid bar.

could you not make a 2 into 1 pipe?

cos if the pumps are the same then the flowrate must be similar?

ergo-regardless of 1 or 2 pipes, the total voulme of fuel is the same?

nothing to do with flow rates. The second pipe is the return pipe to the tank. Some models have the return pipe going into a stub pipe on the tank, so don't need the return on the pump.
