just a quickie, what if any is the function of the smiley cut out on some projector lights, mine has bosch projector but no cut out, so whats it for?

It provides more foreground illumination.

how does that work as the projector unit appears to be too close to the reflector to make any real difference as the light i am guessing is directed foreward by the magnifying glass? could the units be different?

they are indeed different on yours the light all shines forward. On smileys some of the light is directed down through to the smiley cut out.
