First of all check that it is the tank. Usually fails where the filler stub goes into the tank. Other leak sources are the high pressure hoses from the pump, the filter (on a six pot), the metal pipe from the filler to the tank, and the rubber hose that joins them together.
Tank is an easy job to change, except for having to remove the ear of the exhaust and the back of the prop. New tanks are about Ԛ£100 or a bit less IIRC.

the leak is coming from the top of the tank.... and dripping round it... only noticable when 2/3rds full or above.... suspect this is above the level of the filler unless im being stupid...
Cheers

Coming from where exactly. I recently came across an E30 where the O ring seal for the fuel pump had broken, so that's another possibility.
The only place the actual tank is likely to leak is on or just around the stub pipe where the petrol goes in at the rear offside.

It won't be picked up at MOT as long as you don't have to much petrol in the tank and clean the petrol stains of the tank first - and the tester doesn't smoke.Sy_325 wrote:hi there!

Hi guys.
Are plastic petrol tanks available, or just standard metal ones?
Mine has sprung a leak too

as far as im aware only metal ones

I had the same prob on my E30. Ended up having to take the tank out and repair it. Was a right tuuat of a job and all. Ended up taking it to a specialist who recon'd fuel tanks in the end.
Anyway, Hello Paul. Fancy seeing you on here. A clue I also have a piece of Czech RS hardware

Jimmy, where did you take the tank ?

It was a few years ago but (and this is where my memory gets hazy) I'm sure it was Clearflow in Darlington that repaired mine. They ended up doing the whole job for me incl dropping the prop and tank in the end.smithy318i wrote:Jimmy, where did you take the tank ?
IIRC they specialised in radiator / fuel tank repairs. A quick google brought this up. Might be worth a call
