is there a easy way of telling if one has a lsd? there a 4 diffs at a friends and none of us know if they have a lsd?

To be 100% sure the best way is to take the cast aluminium plate off and look at whats inside.

turn one side of it and see if the other side spins the same way!!! If so its an lsd. If spins opposite its not!!!

Another way is to turn one of the outputs and if they both turn the same way then it should be a lsd.If they turn in opposite directions then its an open diff.

only REAL way is to open and look for the clutches. the two other options above will also work for a welded diff.

failing that look at the diff tag, an LSD will have an S in the tag before of after the ratio.

thanks will look at tags for s and try the methods the guys have put up cant see any wleding on diffs
what are lsd,s worth?

You will only see the weld once you have removed the backplate - the gears inside are welded together.
If you remove the backplate, you will be able to see the clutches anyway (or not).

the holes you can see in the 'spool' are huge in an open diff and you can see the gears inside. eg, if it looks different to that pic, it's not a LSD :D
